Student Life AT THE FRISCO SCHOOL OF MUSIC MUSIC AND VOICE LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS Practice Club: All students can join our Practice Club. Students complete a Practice Club Card during the week with five practices and parent initials, and bring it to the front desk to receive their game token for the music prize vending machine. The card is then entered into our Mega Music Practice Prize Drawing held twice a year for a chance to win a local area gift certificate (currently $30 Best Buy Card). So then, even if you think you are "too cool" to participate in the vending machine prizes, you will probably be up for a cool gift certificate - right? Our lobby is filled with very proud students redeeming their tokens each week and getting their prizes. Lots of fun! Parent Performance Days in Piano Lab, Guitar Lab, Singers Lab:  Four times during the year we hold Parent Performance Day in the Labs (see Calendar of Events for specific dates). Parents attend the last 30 minutes of class during their regularly scheduled class time for student solo and group ensemble performances. Plus, the teacher will discuss class curriculum and give details of what the students have been working on, as well and answer any questions that parents may have about home assignments, moving to private lessons, the Star Power Band Series program, etc. These performance days are very popular and not to be missed. Parents can see the progress of each student and the class as a whole by attending the performances during the year. You will be amazed at the amount of material and music learning the group covers, and the level of musicianship demonstrated by the students. Music Showcase for Private Students: Many of our private students participate in our Music Showcase each year in June. This is an optional performance - if a student is not yet feeling comfortable about getting up in front of an audience they are not pressured (however they are certainly invited to attend the performance as an audience member). Students/parents complete a Music Showcase Registration Form and return it to our office before the deadline, and perform a solo in a relaxed and friendly setting. The performance fee is $5 (billed to your Materials Account). We generally have 6-7 showcases on a Saturday, one-hour each with 15 or so students on each program. Students receive a Certificate of Achievement at their performance, and a good time is had by all. Texas State Theory Test: All students at the Frisco School of Music work on theory curriculum at their level, but we realize that some students are not interested or available to devote additional time to prepare for and attend a special testing day. Sitting for the yearly Texas State Theory Test is optional, and is for students who want to earn a medal for a score of 90 and above. Interested students complete a Texas State Theory Test Registration Form and return it to our office before the deadline. There is a written and a listening section for each test level. The testing fee is $15 (billed to your materials account). The Texas State Theory Test covers basic musical knowledge at levels 1-12. Concepts include level appropriate questions regarding note names, intervals, chords, rhythms, meters, patterns and scales, key signatures, harmonic progression, vocabulary, ear-training and more. All information on the test is covered in the weekly private lessons and in the Theory Time Books. Students prepare by completing and reviewing all chapters in their level Theory Time Book, and by completing two practice tests during the semester. Students earn a ribbon for participating, and a medal for scoring 90-101. Rising Star Music Competition: Each year the Frisco School of Music hosts the Rising Star Music Competition. The purpose of the Competition is to recognize talented young musicians, and is open Frisco area students at two age levels: 9-13 years old, and 14-18 years old. Instrument Divisions include Piano, Guitar/Bass, Drums, Violin and Voice. Students enter by posting their video on-line for preliminary voting by the public. Finalists perform at the Frisco School of Music on competition day and are judged by a panel of local talent agents, and celebrity judges. Think American Idol here…winners receive trophies and cash awards, and also receive a cash award for their public/private school music department. This event is amazing, and brings out the best and most talented young musicians in the community. Star Power Performances at Band Class: Three times each year, students who are enrolled in our Star Power Band Series perform a solo for their band mates in preparation for an upcoming stage performance at our school (see Calendar of Events for specific dates). This is a great opportunity, since they can "try out" their solo to make sure they are ready to perform in front of a live audience, before they hit the big stage! Fall and Spring Concerts for Star Power Band Students: Lights, Camera Action! Twice a year the Star Power Band Students perform in our Performance Hall on a stage with professional equipment, lighting and sound. The Concerts feature each student as a soloist, plus a performance by each Band as well. With so many different instrumentalists represented, plus the Bands, the one-hour Concerts keep the attention of all family members. These Concerts are one of the many highlights of our School, and what keeps students coming back year after year. Spring Music Festival for Star Power Band Students: The Spring Music Festival gives students a chance to get feedback about their musical performance from another musical professional. Students perform a solo for a judge and receive a critique sheet with specific comments and a rating, a certificate, and a performance ribbon. This is not a competition; rather the students are rated on a standard of musical excellence. Families and friends attend as the audience, and cheer on each student. Piano students perform one movement from a Sonata or Sonatina, and other instrumentalists have open repertoire. See Calendar of Events for specific dates. Adult Music Student Party Nights: We have a great mix of very interesting adult students at our School. Some are starting music lessons for the very first time, and others are getting back into instruments they learned while growing up. Adults share their music at our Adult Music Student Party Nights, get to know each other, swap stories about lessons and how it feels to perform in front of others, or just attend and cheer on other students if they are not yet ready to perform. See Calendar of Events  for specific dates. “Providing students of all ages with the skills to enjoy music for a lifetime.” Ready To Get Started?
