Announcing: 214-436-4058 music@friscoschoolofmusic.com FRISCO SCHOOL OF MUSIC 2011 RISING STAR MUSIC COMPETITION FINALISTS Fasten your seat belts and hang on……this is going to be too much fun!! The Preliminary Judging team has met, and carefully reviewed all of the amazing talent entries for the Frisco School of Music’s 2011 RISING STAR MUSIC COMPETITION and has come to a decision on the finalists for the April 16 Competition. First of all, the Preliminary Judges wanted to extend their thanks to all of the Frisco School of Music students for preparing their musical selections and taking time to enter this Competition. It was very difficult for them to come up with a decision on the finalists due to the amazing number of young musicians who entered.   Each and every one of the contestants receives a $100 Tuition Scholarship to FSM for the 2011-2012 School Year just for entering. Congratulations! We are very excited to welcome our distinguished judging panel to this years Competition.   Barbara started in the film business in 1981 as a casting assistant and extras coordinator for “Dallas” and “Places in the Heart”. Her casting and coordinating resume includes “Necessary Roughness”, “Dangerous Curves”, “Dr T and the Women”, “Walker Texas Ranger”. Or as we like to call them — basically every film or tv project shot here in the last 25 years. If someone appeared on a show in our area, Barbara most likely had something to do with it. Due to her work on “Walker”, she dealt with many children through the show’s affiliations with Kick Drugs out of America, the Special Olympics and the Texas Youth Commission. She also cast commercials as well, giving her a great perspective on how to get our littlest clients ready for the cameras. In addition to her professional life, Barbara has raised two daughters and is still raising one husband. http://www.thecampbellagency.com Barbara Blanchette Talent Judge Luis Martinez  Technical Music Judge Luis Martinez has been an instructor at Booker T. Washington for over 28 years, and this year, he was named interim music cluster coordinator. He certainly takes his new job seriously, staying busy from early morning to late at night! Mr. Martinez was born in Brownsville, Texas in 1955 and started playing the trumpet when he was ten. His first professional gig was at the age of 14, in a Tijuana brass cover band, named, “Bordertown Brass.” He knew then that being around music was what he wanted to do with his life. He has been married to his wife, Pam, for 26 years, and has a daughter, Alicia, an English teacher in the Mesquite ISD, and a son Ross, who graduated from Booker T. in 2002. Luis is certified to teach all instruments, K-12, and holds a Bachelor’s in Music Education from North Texas State University (UNT). He was working on his masters there, when the position became available at BTW. Dr. Cornell, the music coordinator at the time, hired him over the other 5 highly qualified candidates, due to his in-depth knowledge of Comprehensive Music Theory, the core basis of Booker T’s curriculum then and now. He had already held teaching positions in Liberty, Texas and White Settlement, Texas, between his graduation and beginning work on his Masters.    Mr. Martinez is a charter member of the Dallas Wind Symphony and has played trumpet with them for 24 years. Mr. Martinez, who is in charge of 239 students in the music cluster, teaches the Wind Ensemble, the woodwind and brass technique class, sound engineering, Advanced Comprehensive Music I, co-teaches the symphony orchestra with David Large and co-teaches the R&B ensemble with Roger Boykin. In one small way, Luis hopes he has helped hone the skills of his talented students, always sad to see them move on, but ready for the next freshman class! http://www.dallasisd.org/btw/ Here is a listing of the Finalists who will perform for our Judges on April 16th at our 2011 Rising Star Competition. Typically, each age and instrument category has three Contestants (some age ranges and details have changed due to the number of entries by certain age/instrument groups).
